ONE STAR: A Horror Short Story, The Behrg

Every action has a consequence. But when Li posts a one-star review of a novel on her book blog, the results are far more frightening than she could ever have imagined. Not every story was meant to have a happy ending.

ONE STAR is a previously unpublished horror short story, being released in The Behrg’s upcoming short story collection–“The Passengers You Cannot See.” It is the author’s love letter to book bloggers and reviewers, and thus is being offered as a free download to any book reviewer in part to thank all those who have been a part of the author’s journey. And if you haven’t yet been a part, there’s no better time than now to jump in that car and ride along. Oh, the vistas you will see.

For more free fiction, including the critically acclaimed story “The Lines,” and the first book in THE CREATION SERIES, join Behrg’s newsletter at for infrequent updates and a first look at upcoming releases. Your dopamine levels will thank you.

Get swept away in Erin A. Craig’s mesmerizing House of Salt and Sorrows. As one by one her beautiful sisters mysteriously die on their isolated island estate, Annaleigh must unravel the curse that haunts her family. Be careful who you dance with. . . .

In a manor by the sea, twelve sisters are cursed.

Annaleigh lives a sheltered life at Highmoor with her sisters and their father and stepmother. Once there were twelve, but loneliness fills the grand halls now that four of the girls’ lives have been cut short. Each death was more tragic than the last–the plague, a plummeting fall, a drowning, a slippery plunge–and there are whispers throughout the surrounding villages that the family is cursed by the gods.

Disturbed by a series of ghostly visions, Annaleigh becomes increasingly suspicious that her sister’s deaths were no accidents. The girls have been sneaking out every night to attend glittering balls, dancing until dawn in silk gowns and shimmering slippers, and Annaleigh isn’t sure whether to try to stop them or to join their forbidden trysts. Because who–or what–are they really dancing with?

When Annaleigh’s involvement with a mysterious stranger who has secrets of his own intensifies, it’s a race to unravel the darkness that has fallen over her family–before it claims her next. House of Salt and Sorrows is a spellbinding novel filled with magic and the rustle of gossamer skirts down long, dark hallways. Get ready to be swept away.

THE MINES, by Daniel Yuschick

Always interested in the macabre and obscure, Tas loves traveling to explore abandoned and dangerous dark tourism destinations. She’s fascinated by learning the often untold and violent histories of forgotten places. When a journal from the diamond mining ghost town, Kolmanskop, Namibia, mysteriously lands on her desk, she has the chance to learn her darkest one yet. It’s been her dream to bring lost stories to life at the history museum and Kolmanskop touts a wealth of secrecy buried beneath its sands. Secrets Tas wants to uncover.

But if dreams can come true, what about nightmares?

Dean’s debilitating anxiety attacks are triggered by his increasingly realistic dreams in which he feels conscious and alive. Only when those dreams start playing out in real life does he question whether they dictate his future or if he’s still in control. He’s terrified of the answer and crippled with the very real possibility that his nightmares will soon fester to life.

Especially, the nightmare with Tas.

Tune in next week for another round of recent releases! In the meantime, please share what you’re reading in the comments below.

Scary books make everything so much better! I've been reading them since I was a wee, weird little thing and grew up with a steady diet of King, Koontz, Barker, and Brite and will read and watch just about anything with a hint of darkness.
